A year at forty feeling shorter than a year at ten comes down to what the brain has to work with | childhood runs on novelty while adulthood runs on familiarity, so the mind leans on old memories instead of encoding fresh ones. That is also why time seems to speed up as we get older. But the real driver of brain aging is repetition, not time itself. Predictable days make neurons quiet down sooner. Experience is what builds neural pathways, new experiences create new connections, and repetition strengthens the ones already there. Hold the same patterns for years and the construction side shuts off. The good news is neuroplasticity stays active for life, so growing new neurons, learning and changing all remain on the table. Break the loop and the brain wakes back up, and time stretches out again
so if the brain needs novelty to feel time slow down does that mean we need to actively disrupt our routines or just travel more? Because my life is so predictable I feel like my days are blurring together
