In Toraja, Indonesia, the cultural practice involves keeping deceased family members inside homes until a funeral finally takes place, which might be delayed for months or even years. The local belief system holds that these individuals stay in a state of being sick or asleep during this waiting period. Daily care rituals are performed by relatives, such as taking a mummified body to a garden to comb its hair and change its clothes. There is also the Ma'nene ritual where ancestors are exhumed specifically to be cleaned and redressed before the final burial.
