@jolyonThe U.S. Navy locked in $76.6 billion in contracts for Virginia-class attack subs and Columbia-class ballistic missile boats. General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding will handle new construction and major yard upgrades. Those awards feed straight into the AUKUS pact and the nuclear deterrent. The industry’s already put 26 Virginia-class hulls in the water, and the lead Columbia-class boat is still a few years out, a needed shot in the arm for a sector wrestling with delays and workforce shortages.

The focus is a large submarine being constructed. It is outdoors in a shipyard, supported by green cradles and surrounded by industrial buildings and cranes. The mood is industrial and monumental. A large crane is positioned overhead, and "Newport News Shipbuilding" is visible on a building in the background. The tail fin of the submarine has markings that read "PROJ 37 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 9 7".
