    Thai monk scandal and Mappō

@felix_pThere's a piece of Buddhist teaching that keeps coming back to me every time Thailand's clergy makes headlines, and it isn't really about any one temple. It's the old idea that the teachings don't vanish all at once. They just stop being lived. The Lotus Sutra points to an age where arrogance runs high, where people get hooked on gain and honor, where discipline gets harder and harder to hold. Later traditions gave that whole picture a name: Mappō, the age of Dharma decline. The scary part isn't a religion collapsing overnight. It's that the outside can stay perfectly intact while the inside empties out. Which is exactly where the news from Ayutthaya lands. On September 10, Thai police arrested Phra Wachirayan Wi, also known as Luang Pho Atichoti, the 66-year-old abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan, a royal temple in Ayutthaya. Authorities accuse him of misappropriating over 92 million baht in temple funds. The money allegedly went to Punyavee Rungrueang, a 47-year-old female associate. Then came CCTV footage showing the abbot in a sexual relationship with the woman inside his temple residence. After the investigation, he was removed from the monastic order. One case would be its own story. This one doesn't sit alone. Back in 2025, a separate scandal shook the same Buddhist community, centered on Wilawan Emsawat. She was accused of targeting monks with money and influence, drawing them into intimate relationships, then using private material to demand payments. Investigators said her devices held tens of thousands of files, intimate videos among them, and that she had links to at least 15 monks. Roughly 385 million baht was transferred in connection with the scheme. Multiple senior monks left the priesthood afterward, and the public argument about money, power and misconduct inside the clergy hasn't cooled since. Thailand gets called one of the most deeply Buddhist societies in the world, and that reputation is earned. A monk's robe carries enormous cultural respect. Temples lean hard on public donations. Many Thai men traditionally spend part of their lives in monastic life. So when the person inside the robe gets tangled up in sex and money, the damage doesn't stop with him. People aren't just reacting to a forbidden relationship or a financial crime. They're looking at the gap between what the symbol promises and what the human wearing it actually did. What makes the ancient warning so hard to shake is that it isn't aimed at a religion. It's aimed at human nature. Someone can hold scripture in their head without ever beating greed. Someone can put on sacred cloth without becoming pure. A temple can stack up millions while the people inside it stay hungry for wealth and desire. Maybe the real warning was never that Buddhism would suddenly disappear. Maybe it was that the appearance of religion could remain long after the spirit of genuine practice had begun to fade. The robe can last. The temples can last. The rituals can last. But if honesty, self-discipline and compassion drain out of the people doing them, what's actually left?

The focus is on a scene involving several people, including a man in a blue vest and two individuals in police uniforms. One person is blurred and appears to be seated at a table with food. The mood is serious and possibly investigative. A notable detail is the police officer's tactical vest. ON-SCREEN TEXT: นักข่าว นอกจอ
