The Three Lions didn't enter the tournament before 1950, sitting out the 1930, 1934, and 1938 editions. Their best result remains the 1966 title, when they won the trophy on home soil. They finished 8th in 1950, 6th in 1954, 11th in 1958, 8th in 1962, 8th in 1970, 4th in 1990, and 9th in 1998. England failed to qualify in 1974, 1978, and 1994.
