Japan's journey in the FIFA World Cup has been a long road. They did not participate in 1930 or 1934, withdrew in 1938, were banned in 1950, and failed to qualify in 1954. They skipped 1958, missed qualification again in 1962, and did not enter in 1966. From 1970 through 1994, they failed to qualify every time. Finally, in 1998, Japan made their debut at the World Cup.
