The real tragedy in Beauty And The Beast isn't the curse on the castle. It's that reading was treated like a sickness in that village, and Belle was the only one who could do it. She wasn't odd. Everyone around her was aggressively mediocre, and the film knows it. What gets dismissed as just a Disney romance is actually a story about isolation, about toxic masculinity running through both Gaston and the Beast, about empathy as something with actual power, and about a woman who values a mind over the handsome guy everyone expects her to want. The whole thing is inherently radical and always was. She goes into a cursed castle to find her father. She comes out with a library, a found family made of enchanted objects, and a man who learns his own humanity because she wouldn't let fear run the room. That's not a fairy tale. That's a character study with a killer soundtrack.
