A doctor inserts a small sterile blade into the swollen abscess to make an opening and remove the trapped ingrown hair using fine, sterile forceps. Before this, the skin is cleaned and numbed with local anesthetic. Once opened, the pus drains out, relieving pressure beneath the skin. The cavity may then be gently flushed with sterile saline to remove remaining fluid and debris. If the ingrown hair is visible, it may also be carefully removed. For larger abscesses, a small piece of packing may be placed inside temporarily to keep the opening draining. Finally, the area is covered with a clean dressing and allowed to heal gradually from the inside out.
