October 14, 1980 marked the arrival of a new weekly magazine from Shogakukan designed to capture the gritty realism of modern life. Unlike its older sibling Big Comic, which focused on mature literary works, this publication sought stories that felt immediate and unpolished. The editors built a platform for narratives about food, sports, romance, and business that questioned societal norms while allowing protagonists to struggle without guaranteed redemption arcs.

The magazine hit newsstands on a Tuesday but quickly settled into a Monday release schedule that continues today. Commercial success peaked in 2008 with weekly sales reaching 300,000 copies, though broader industry decline saw figures drop to 168,250 by 2015. By late 2025 circulation hovered around 40,000 copies as readers shifted toward digital formats. Shogakukan responded to market shifts in 2009 by launching Monthly Big Comic Spirits to accommodate longer-form storytelling needs.

Creators like Naoki Urasawa found a home here when he serialized Asadora! starting in 2018. George Asakura launched Dance Dance Danseur in 2015, and the Kamen Rider W sequel Fuuto PI debuted in 2017. The magazine also hosted unique premises such as Bōkyaku no Sachiko, where a woman forgets everything after drinking, and Haibaiyōshi Mizuiro, set inside a hair salon. These titles helped establish the magazine's reputation for risk-taking over safe trends.
