Blue Lock follows Yoichi Isagi, a second-year high school forward who dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. After Japan's national team suffers a humiliating defeat at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, finishing 16th, the Japan Football Union hires the enigmatic football mastermind Jinpachi Ego. Ego's controversial theory holds that Japan's lack of a world-class striker stems from an overemphasis on teamwork and selflessness. To fix this, he establishes Blue Lock, a cutthroat training facility where 300 of Japan's best youth strikers are confined and forced to compete in a battle royale-style elimination program. Only one will emerge as the ultimate striker who will lead Japan to World Cup glory; all who fail are permanently banned from representing the national team. Isagi, initially a timid player who prioritizes team harmony, must radically transform his mindset and devour his competitors to survive.

Written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, the manga began serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine on August 1, 2018. As of June 2026, the series has been collected into 39 tankōbon volumes. The English edition is published by Kodansha USA in North America, with translation by Nate Derr. A spin-off manga, Blue Lock: Episode Nagi, written by Kaneshiro and illustrated by Kōta Sannomiya, is serialized in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine.

The series is classified as a sports thriller, blending traditional soccer storytelling with survival-game elements. Its central theme is egoism versus teamwork, arguing that true greatness requires selfish ambition and the willingness to devour others to achieve personal glory. The artwork by Nomura, who previously worked as an assistant to Hajime Isayama, emphasizes dynamic movement and exaggerated facial expressions during moments of intense egotism. The series has been praised for its intense action, unique premise, and character development, with reviewers noting that Isagi evolves from a timid team player into a stronger, more self-centered competitor within just the first four chapters.

By June 2026, the manga had over 60 million copies in circulation worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. It was the top-selling manga series in Japan for the first half of 2023. In 2021, Blue Lock won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category. It has also been nominated for a Harvey Award and the Angoulême International Comics Festival. An anime television series adaptation produced by Eight Bit aired from October 2022 to March 2023, with a second season subtitled vs. U-20 Japan airing from October to December 2024. A third season, subtitled Neo Egoist League, has been announced. An anime film adaptation based on the Episode Nagi spin-off premiered in April 2024, and a live-action film adaptation is set to premiere in Japan in August 2026.
