Daniel Passarella

Daniel Passarella is an Argentine former footballer and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the sport. He captained Argentina to victory in the 1978 FIFA World Cup and was also part of the 1986 World Cup-winning squad, making him the only Argentine player to win two World Cups. As a centre-back, Passarella was an exceptional goalscorer, netting 134 goals in 451 club matches, at the time of his retirement, the highest tally for a defender in football history. He was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living footballers in 2004. After his playing career, Passarella managed the Argentina and Uruguay national teams, led River Plate to a league title as manager, and later served as the club's president. His legacy is defined by his leadership, discipline, and unique ability to score from defence.[编辑]

Daniel Passarella's supporters are not organized under a formal fandom name, a distinction that reflects the era of his peak in the 1970s and 1980s, before the advent of social media-driven fan collectives. His admirers are primarily drawn from the broader fanbases of River Plate and the Argentina national team, where he is revered as a legendary figure. Despite the lack of a named fandom, his legacy ensures a passionate following among traditionalists and River Plate supporters, who celebrate his status as one of the greatest defenders in football history.

As of August 2026, iFANN's Global Fame Engine has evaluated Daniel Passarella, but he does not currently hold a placement in the published rankings, including the Global Top 1,000 or any Top-100 scope list. This absence from the rankings does not diminish his historical stature; rather, it reflects the metrics of contemporary fame, which often favor active players and modern media figures. Passarella's fame endures through his World Cup victories and his record as a prolific scoring defender, a feat that remains a talking point among football historians.[编辑]

Known as 'El Gran Capitán' (The Great Captain) in Argentina, Passarella was River Plate's primary penalty taker and free-kick specialist despite being a defender. He never received a red card in his entire international career for Argentina. His record of 134 goals as a defender stood until Ronald Koeman surpassed it in the 1990s. He once told Diego Maradona he would 'cut his legs off' if Maradona didn't follow team discipline, a statement Maradona later confirmed in his autobiography.

One of the most retold stories from his managerial career is his ban on long hair for the Argentina national team, which led to the exclusion of Claudio Caniggia from the 1998 World Cup squad. This decision remains a subject of debate and inside jokes among Argentine football fans. Another iconic moment is his performance in the 1978 World Cup final, where he captained Argentina to a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands, anchoring a defense that held firm against the Dutch attack.[编辑]

Passarella played alongside Diego Maradona, Mario Kempes, and Jorge Valdano in Argentina's World Cup-winning squads. He was mentored by Ángel Labruna and managed under César Luis Menotti and Carlos Bilardo. As manager, he coached Enzo Francescoli and famously clashed with Claudio Caniggia over disciplinary rules.[编辑]

Daniel Passarella has had only one confirmed romantic relationship. He married Adriana in 1978, during the peak of his playing career. Adriana is a private individual with no public profession. The couple has two children: Lucas (born 1980) and Verónica (born 1984). They have maintained a stable, low-profile marriage for over four decades, with no records of separations or other relationships. As of 2026, Passarella remains married to Adriana.[编辑]

As things stand in 2026, iFANN's editorial research estimates Daniel Passarella's net worth at approximately $12 million. His peak playing earnings came during his time at Fiorentina and Inter Milan in the 1980s, where he earned around $500,000 to $1 million per season. His highest managerial salary was with River Plate, estimated at $1.5 million annually. He had endorsement deals with Adidas and local Argentine brands during his playing career. Passarella owns properties in Buenos Aires and a family farm in Chacabuco, and has invested in Argentine real estate and a small chain of football academies. His four-year presidency of River Plate was unpaid or token compensation.[编辑]

Passarella won two FIFA World Cups as a player (1978, 1986), five Argentine Primera División titles with River Plate, and one Clausura title as River Plate manager. He was named in the FIFA 100 list of greatest living footballers in 2004.[编辑]
