Dave Meltzer

Dave Meltzer is not currently ranked in iFANN's Global Top 1,000 or any Top-100 scope list as of August 2026, according to the Global Fame Engine's evaluation. That may surprise those who consider him the most influential wrestling journalist of all time, but his fame, while immense within his niche, hasn't translated into broader global recognition. He remains a towering figure in the worlds of professional wrestling and MMA, where his name is synonymous with insider knowledge and match analysis.

His fanbase has no formal name. There's no "Meltzerite" army, no official fan club, no coordinated campaigns. Instead, his followers are known simply as "Observer readers" or "WON subscribers," a reference to his Wrestling Observer Newsletter. They are a dedicated, highly engaged community that pores over every issue, debates his star ratings on Reddit and X, and treats his reporting as the definitive word on wrestling business. For these fans, the weekly newsletter drop is a ritual, and the subsequent online discourse is part of the experience. While they may not organize billboards or charity drives, their collective enthusiasm has elevated Meltzer's ratings into a cultural currency that can make or break a wrestler's reputation.[编辑]

Dave Meltzer's star rating system was inspired by film critic Leonard Maltin. He has never worked for a wrestling promotion, maintaining his independence. He has a photographic memory for match dates and attendance figures from the 1970s onward. He is a lifelong fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants. He has been criticized for perceived bias toward Japanese wrestling. His nickname "Dave" is universally used; he has no other widely known moniker.

One of the most legendary aspects of Meltzer's career is his willingness to award ratings above five stars. In 2017, he gave six stars to the Okada-Omega match at Wrestle Kingdom 11, and later seven stars to their 2018 encounter, a decision that sent shockwaves through the wrestling world and became a defining moment in his legacy. Another iconic element is his encyclopedic knowledge, which has spawned the folklore that "Meltzer knows everything." Fans and insiders alike repeat stories of his uncanny recall of obscure details, cementing his status as the sport's ultimate historian.[编辑]

As of 2026, iFANN's editorial research estimates Dave Meltzer's net worth at $4 million. His primary income source is the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which generates an estimated $500,000 to $1 million annually from subscriptions. Additional revenue streams include Figure Four Online ad revenue, podcast advertising, speaking fees at conventions, book royalties from titles like Tributes and The Wrestling Observer Yearbook series, and past freelance work for Yahoo! Sports and SI.com. He owns a home in California, though its value is not public. Over the decades, his net worth has grown steadily as he expanded into digital media and podcasts.[编辑]
