Ferris Bueller is a high school senior in Shermer, Illinois, who has perfected the art of faking illness to skip school. With graduation just around the corner, he decides to pull off one last, grand day of freedom. His target: Chicago, with his girlfriend Sloane Peterson and best friend Cameron Frye in tow. Ferris fakes a severe illness, complete with a fabricated fever and a series of clever phone calls to his parents, who are convinced he's bedridden.

The trouble starts when Assistant Principal Ed Rooney, who has long suspected Ferris of truancy, becomes determined to catch him in the act. Rooney camps out near Ferris's house, but Ferris outwits him by using a recording of his own voice to simulate a phone conversation. Meanwhile, Ferris's sister Jeanie, resentful of his effortless charm, also grows suspicious and decides to expose him.

To get Sloane out of school, Ferris calls the school pretending to be her father, claiming her grandmother has died. The ruse works, and Sloane is released into Ferris's custody. The trio then heads to Chicago in Cameron's father's prized 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder. Their first stop is the Art Institute of Chicago, where Cameron has a moment of quiet reflection. They then attend a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field, where Ferris catches a foul ball and gets his face on the Jumbotron.

Later, Ferris commandeers a float in the Von Steuben Day parade, lip-syncing to Wayne Newton's Danke Schoen and The Beatles' Twist and Shout. The crowd goes wild. They enjoy a lavish lunch at a fancy French restaurant, posing as a wealthy family. Throughout the day, Ferris breaks the fourth wall, sharing his life philosophy with the audience.

Back home, Rooney breaks into Ferris's house to find evidence, only to be attacked by the family dog and forced to flee. Jeanie, meanwhile, goes to the police station to report Ferris, but a conversation with a cool, detached boy (Charlie Sheen) makes her reconsider.
