Shut Down

Blackpink released "Shut Down" on September 16, 2022, as the lead single from their second studio album Born Pink. The track was recorded at The Black Label Studio in Seoul and runs for two minutes and 56 seconds. Teddy and 24 handled production duties while Teddy, Danny Chung, and Vince wrote the lyrics. This release marked the group's final major single under their contract with Interscope Records before departing the label in 2025.

Musically the song relies on trap beats and a looped violin sample taken from Niccolò Paganini's 1826 composition La Campanella. Korean violinist Echae Kang performed the sampled section which forms the core melody of the track. The lyrics address critics directly with lines such as "Praying for my downfall many have tried baby" and "When we pull up you know it's a shutdown." Some reviewers noted the use of classical samples had become a repetitive trope in K-pop despite the song's assertive tone.

The music video directed by Seok Woo-seok premiered alongside the single and features high-concept visuals referencing Blackpink's previous eras. Scenes recreate moments from earlier title tracks including Playing with Fire, Whistle, Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, Boombayah, and Kill This Love. The video also includes visual nods to other YG Entertainment artists like 2NE1 and BigBang. Critical reception ranged from mixed to positive with praise for the memorable production and delivery.
