    概览

FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki essentially invented the Soulslike genre with Demon's Souls in 2009. These action role-playing games throw players into sprawling, dark fantasy worlds filled with deadly enemies and minimal hand-holding. Death is frequent and punishing, but each failure teaches you something: enemy patterns, map layouts, the story hidden in item descriptions and environment details. The name comes from the Dark Souls trilogy (2011-2016), which exploded in popularity and defined the template. Fans often lump all of FromSoftware's similar titles under "Soulsborne," a blend of Souls and Bloodborne (2015).

The formula has spread far beyond FromSoftware. Games like Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary borrow the high difficulty, sparse checkpoints, and indirect storytelling, even if they're 2D or metroidvanias. The core loop remains the same: explore a hostile world, die, learn, and try again. While most Soulslike games are action RPGs, the design principles have influenced shooters, platformers, and even roguelikes. The subgenre now stands as a distinct flavor of challenge-focused gaming, recognizable by its deliberate pacing, cryptic lore, and the satisfaction of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds.

By 2022, the genre reached a mainstream peak with Elden Ring, which sold over 20 million copies and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Its open world retained the signature difficulty but added freedom of exploration, drawing in players who had never touched a Souls game before. The genre's commercial success has prompted many studios to release their own takes, from the steampunk Lies of P to the Chinese mythology-inspired Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Soulslike is no longer a niche, it is a dominant force in modern action gaming.

    游戏玩法

Combat in Soulslike games revolves around a stamina bar. Every swing of a weapon, roll, or block consumes stamina, and running out leaves you vulnerable. This forces deliberate, tactical decisions rather than button-mashing. Enemies hit hard, and bosses can kill you in two or three hits. The key is learning attack patterns and finding openings. Weapons vary widely in speed, reach, and damage, and players can upgrade them using rare materials found throughout the world.

Exploration is nonlinear. Worlds are interconnected, with shortcuts that loop back to earlier bonfires or lanterns, the checkpoints where you rest, level up, and respawn enemies. Dying drops all your accumulated souls (currency and experience) at the spot of death. You get one chance to retrieve them; if you die again on the way, they're gone forever. This risk-reward loop creates tension in every area. Many games also feature asynchronous multiplayer: you can leave messages for other players, see their death ghosts, summon help, or get invaded by hostile players.

The genre rarely explains its systems. There are no quest markers or detailed tutorials. Players must experiment with items, read stat descriptions, and piece together how mechanics work. This philosophy extends to storytelling: lore is delivered through item descriptions, environmental details, and cryptic NPC dialogue, not cutscenes. The world feels ancient and mysterious, with a history you uncover gradually through fragments.

    故事

The typical Soulslike narrative drops you into a fallen or decaying world with a vague goal. In Dark Souls, you are an undead cursed to rise again after death, tasked with linking the fire to prevent the Age of Dark. Bloodborne sends you to the gothic city of Yharnam, where a plague turns people into beasts, and you must end the night of the hunt. Elden Ring places you as a Tarnished, exiled from the Lands Between, summoned back to become the Elden Lord by repairing the shattered Elden Ring.

The backstory is always a grand tragedy: ancient gods, fallen kingdoms, and cyclical curses. The player character is often a nameless outsider with little dialogue. The story unfolds through environmental storytelling, a crumbling castle, a dead dragon, a lone NPC offering cryptic hints. Key lore is hidden in item descriptions, requiring players to read and connect dots. The ending is usually a choice that determines the world's fate, such as linking the fire or letting it fade. This fragmented narrative invites community analysis and theory-crafting, with fans debating the true history of these worlds for years after release.
