Stephen King

Stephen King is an American author whose name has become synonymous with modern horror. Over a five-decade career, he has published more than 50 novels and 200 short stories, selling over 350 million copies worldwide. His work spans horror, suspense, fantasy, and crime, with adaptations including The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, and It. As of 2026, he continues to write and publish, with recent novels like Holly (2023) and You Like It Darker (2024). King is also known for his outspoken social media presence and his role as a guitarist and vocalist in the charity rock band Rock Bottom Remainders.

Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, at Maine General Hospital in Portland. His father, Donald Edwin King, a merchant seaman and vacuum salesman, left the family when Stephen was two, reportedly stepping out for cigarettes and never returning. This abandonment plunged the family into financial hardship. His mother, Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King, worked as a caregiver at a mental institution. The family moved frequently across Maine, Massachusetts, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Connecticut before settling in Durham, Maine, in 1958 to care for Nellie's elderly parents.

King attended Durham Elementary School and later Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. He developed an early love for horror films and comic books, and began writing stories as a teenager. In 1965, his first published story, "I Was a Teenage Grave Robber," appeared in Comics Review. He made his first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. After high school, King attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1970. During college, he was arrested for stealing road traffic cones and paid the $250 fine with proceeds from his short story "The Raft." After graduation, King worked odd jobs, including at an industrial laundry, before becoming an English teacher at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine, in fall 1971. He wrote in the evenings and on weekends, often struggling to make ends meet.

King's breakthrough came in spring 1973 when Doubleday & Co. accepted his novel Carrie for publication. The book, released in 1974, became a bestseller, allowing him to quit teaching and write full-time. He followed with 'Salem's Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), and The Stand (1978), each cementing his reputation. The novella collection Different Seasons (1982) showed his range beyond horror, yielding film adaptations Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption.

In 1992, King joined the Rock Bottom Remainders, a charity rock band of authors founded by Kathi Kamen Goldmark. He sang lead on "Teen Angel" and played guitar, performing at venues like the Miami Book Fair and New York's Webster Hall. The band raised over $3 million for literacy causes before disbanding in 2012 after Goldmark's death. In 1999, King was struck by a van while walking near his home, suffering severe injuries. During his recovery, he wrote On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (2000). He has continued to publish steadily, with recent works including Holly (2023) and You Like It Darker (2024). His work has been adapted into over 50 films and TV series, with recent hits like It (2017) and The Life of Chuck (2024).

King is universally known as the "King of Horror," a title he earned through decades of bestsellers that blend everyday American life with supernatural terror. Critics and fans praise his detailed character development and ability to explore trauma and redemption. His fandom, which he calls "Constant Readers," is highly engaged with annual conventions and active online communities. King's social media voice is politically outspoken, especially on X (Twitter), where he comments on politics, recommends books, and shares personal observations. Joyce Carol Oates called him "a brilliantly rooted, psychologically 'realistic' writer for whom the American scene has been a continuous source of inspiration."

King married Tabitha Spruce on January 2, 1971. They met at the University of Maine at Orono. Tabitha is a novelist and philanthropist who played a key role in rescuing the Carrie manuscript. They have three children: Naomi King (born 1970), a minister; Joe Hill King (born 1972), an author who writes as Joe Hill; and Owen King (born 1977), an author. The family divides time between homes in Bangor and Center Lovell, Maine, and Florida. King has a close relationship with his sons, having co-written novels with both.
