    简介

System of a Down remains one of the most distinctive and politically charged rock bands of the 21st century. As of 2025, the band is active but has not released a full album since 2005's Hypnotize. They continue to perform at major festivals and select headlining shows, drawing massive crowds with their ferocious live energy. The four members, Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan, are all of Armenian descent, and their heritage deeply informs their music and activism.

The band is known for blending thrash metal, punk, and Armenian folk melodies with rapid-fire tempo changes and Tankian's operatic vocal range. Their lyrics tackle war, government corruption, the Armenian Genocide, and social injustice. With over 12 million records sold worldwide, they have achieved rare crossover success for a metal band, scoring three number-one albums on the Billboard 200. Their 2001 album Toxicity remains a landmark, and singles like "Chop Suey!" and "Aerials" have accumulated billions of streams. Fans connect with the band not just for the music but for their unflinching political stance and commitment to raising awareness about Armenian issues.

System of a Down's story begins in 1992 at a recording studio in Los Angeles. Serj Tankian, then 25, and Daron Malakian, 17, discovered they had attended the same Armenian school but never crossed paths due to their age difference. They formed a band called Soil with drummer Domingo Laranio and bassist Dave Hakopyan. Shavo Odadjian, a friend from the Armenian community, initially managed the group before picking up the bass.

The band changed its name to System of a Down in 1994, taking the name from a poem Malakian had written. Andy Khachaturian joined on drums, and the quartet began playing at local clubs like the Viper Room. Their chaotic, politically charged sets caught the attention of legendary producer Rick Rubin, who signed them to American Recordings in 1997. Rubin connected them with drummer John Dolmayan after Khachaturian left the same year.

Their first official recording appeared on a 1997 Armenian Genocide awareness compilation called Hay Enk. On June 30, 1998, they released their self-titled debut album, a raw blast of nu-metal fury with songs like "Sugar" and "Spiders." The album sold modestly at first but gained traction through relentless touring, including slots on Ozzfest. The breakthrough came with 2001's Toxicity, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 on the week of September 11, 2001. The album's lead single "Chop Suey!" became an anthem, and the band's fusion of heavy riffs, absurdist humor, and political rage connected with a generation disillusioned by war and media manipulation.

System of a Down's sound is a volatile mix of thrash metal, punk rock, and Armenian folk music, held together by Serj Tankian's elastic voice. He can shift from a guttural scream to a lilting melody in the same breath. The band's songs often lack traditional verse-chorus structures, instead lurching through multiple tempo changes and time signatures within three minutes. Daron Malakian's guitar work alternates between chugging riffs and dissonant, Middle Eastern-tinged melodies, while Shavo Odadjian's bass and John Dolmayan's drums lock into grooves that can swing from pummeling to swing-influenced.

Lyrically, the band tackles heavy subjects with a mix of direct anger and surreal imagery. Tankian and Malakian write separately, and their contrasting styles create tension: Tankian's lyrics are often pointed political critiques, while Malakian's veer into more personal and abstract territory. The band's production, overseen by Rick Rubin, emphasizes clarity and punch, allowing each instrument to cut through the chaos. On Mezmerize and Hypnotize, Malakian took on co-lead vocals, adding a higher, more melodic counterpoint to Tankian's baritone. The 2020 singles "Protect the Land" and "Genocidal Humanoidz" returned to their earlier thrashier sound, with lyrics directly addressing the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

System of a Down brought Armenian identity and history into the mainstream of heavy metal. Their unapologetic focus on the Armenian Genocide, through songs like "P.L.U.C.K." and their 2015 concert in Yerevan for 500,000 people, made them cultural ambassadors for the Armenian diaspora. They proved a metal band could top the Billboard 200 without softening their sound, paving the way for other politically aggressive acts. Their genre-blending approach influenced a wave of alternative metal bands in the 2000s, and their anti-war anthems resonated during the Iraq War era. The band's members also engaged in activism outside music: Tankian co-founded Axis of Justice with Tom Morello, a nonprofit promoting social justice through music, and the band has consistently used its platform to speak out against human rights abuses.

    System of a Down 乐队的名字来源于 Malakian 一首题为“System of a Down”的诗。歌曲“P.L.U.C.K.”
