Taika's Reason

Paru Itagaki launched Taika's Reason in January 2025 within Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion. This serialized manga marks a pivot from the anthropomorphic animal society of Beastars to a dystopian narrative featuring real humans. The story unfolds in a near-future Japan facing a severe demographic collapse, prompting a radical government initiative to legally transform pets into humanoid citizens to fill labor shortages.

The protagonist, Taika, is a dog who has undergone this transformation and now navigates the confusing social hierarchies of human high school life. His initial attempts to join the basketball team quickly dissolve into a dark murder mystery when a love triangle involving a character named Ao triggers deeper conspiracies. The plot questions whether these transformed beings retain their original instincts or function as sophisticated constructs designed for human convenience.

Critical reception highlights the series' shift from slice-of-life comedy to psychological horror. Early chapters established a tense atmosphere that critics found compelling, though some readers expressed discomfort with the controversial themes surrounding pet-human relationships. The first volume debuted on April 8, 2025, selling approximately 25,000 copies in its first week and reaching the top 50 on the Oricon charts. [编辑]
