Underneath Your Clothes

Released on April 18, 2002, "Underneath Your Clothes" arrived as the second single from Shakira's first English-language studio album, Laundry Service. The track marked a deliberate pivot for the Colombian singer-songwriter, moving away from the upbeat Latin-rock fusion that defined her earlier international hits toward a sparse, acoustic-driven sound. Written by Shakira and co-produced with her frequent collaborator Lester Mendez, the song relies on minimalist instrumentation featuring prominent acoustic guitar strumming and light percussion to frame her emotive vocals.

The lyrics explore themes of deep affection and the vulnerability required to believe one is worthy of love. While some critics drew parallels to classic pop ballads like The Bangles' Eternal Flame, the track stood out for its raw sincerity and served as a stark counterpoint to the more energetic dance tracks on the same record. Its success was immediate and widespread, reaching number one in eight countries including Argentina, Colombia, Spain, and Mexico.

Commercially, the song became a major force in 2002, ranking as the fifth biggest song in Europe for the year. It peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and reached number 33 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In Australia, the single earned Gold certification, and it continues to generate high streaming numbers across modern platforms despite its age. [编辑]
